Adopt-a-Highway teams make a difference

The Illinois Adopt-a-Highway program enables families and groups to do their part in the fight against litter.

Several local communities have become sponsoring jurisdictions in support of the program. Alton, Bethalto, Elsah and Godfrey have agreed to become partners with Pride, Inc. in administering the program.

Participating teams make a commitment to pick up litter a minimum of four times per year. The volunteers adopt a particular section of roadway that is approved by the Illinois Department of Transportation. Pride, Inc. and the sponsoring jurisdiction provide safety vests, gloves and trash bags to the participants. Pride conducts a training session which outlines safety precautions and IDOT directives. The local Public Works Departments pick up the trash bags that are filled by the volunteers. It’s a great example of teamwork.
