Hartford Beautification Project

Volunteers were the key to a successful beautification project that included planting over 300 trees and bushes throughout the Village of Hartford. Volunteers from Pride, Inc., the Hartford Beautification Committee and Premcor Refining Group Inc. (formerly Clark Refining and Marketing, Inc.) worked together with volunteers from the Wood River Levee District, Hartford- Wood River School District, Madison County Sheriff's Work Alternative Program and area residents and employees. Route 3 corridor was the main focus of the planning, with projects also being completed at the Hartford Grade School, the Hartford Library, the Hartford Senior Citizen building, the Hartford Village Hall, theVeterans Memorial and at two Wood River Levee District pump stations. Premcor's funding of the plant materials, coupled with leadership from Pride Inc. and the vast volunteer base truly made the project come alive for the residents of this community.

Paul Owens, an Ornamental Horticulturist, designed planting plans for each of the areas. The plans were presented at public meetings, where residents offered overwhelming support for the project. Premcor mapped the projects and provided funding to purchase the plantings. Owens, with Village of Hartford employees and volunteers, staked planting areas in preparation for planting days. The Hartford's Women's Club provided breakfast and lunch to the hard working volunteers in the Public Works building.

It was an amazing bonding experience for the community as volunteers showed up on Saturday mornings in November. They completed the projects despite disagreeable weather (50 volunteers even showed up one morning to plant in the snow!).

Many other projects came out of this experience. Most notably, the Hartford Memorial Park was established with donations from the community for trees, bushes, perennials and an attractive entrance sign. Again, Owens designed the plantings for the Memorial Park featuring a Williamsburg Pagoda Gazebo that was donated by Premcor. Owens did an excellent job planning the beautification of this community, suggesting such beautiful plant and tree species as Red Sunset Red Maple, Spring Snow Flowering Crab, Profusion Flowering Crab, Snowdrift Flowering Crab and Stello De Oro Day Lily.
